Minehead changes

This blog is for you to have your say and vent your frustrations or perhaps your approval on how Minehead has changed in the last 50 or so years - for the better or for the worst.

Great historical site. I'm always looking for information about Minehead. I believe my ancestors came from there about 1700 (but I haven't proven it yet - surname Deake).

What an informative site! I am interested in Minehead as I too am trying to track the line of my ancestors. My Great, great, great, great Granfather John Cobley came from Minehead was born about 1753 and died at the age of 62 in 1815. He wifes name was Mary Pool (married in 1784) Son Thomas Cobley B1788. To see the old pictures was wonderful, as I love looking into the past, I will most certainly 'visit' you again. Cheers Christi.

Interesting site. I have a collection of over 200 very old photos of the Minehead area which were collected by my father. Some of them have information about the people in the photograph. I will check whether either Deake or Cobley are mentioned and let you know.

Hi Merlin, saw your blog & wondered if you could help me.
I have just got my grandfather Arthur Theodore Cooper's birth cert.
It says that he was born 1907 in 'Balcaskie, Bampton Sheet, Minehead' but so far I can find no trace of Bampton Sheet, any thought?
Many thanks, Chris

Hi .. informative site, which I bumped into whilst looking for an ancestor.

The transcriptions on genuki (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Minehead/) show the marriage of a John Tribe in 1806. He might be my ancestor - but it's a long way from Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire.

I am wondering if there are any records (eg the 'originals' of the parish records) which might indicate where John was from?

I am also wondering if records for marriages earlier than 1776 (the earliest on genuki) have survived?

If you can point me in the direction of someone who might be able to answer these questions, I'd be grateful.

Thanks,

Paul Chandler

Have just found your site and it is brilliant. My family name on my mother's side is Cook. Lizzie Cook of Culbone was my Great Aunt but I am unable to find out my Great Grandfather and Mother's Christian names and when they arrived at Culbone to work for Lady Lovelace. Lizzie Cook was married to her first cousin Tom Cook. He was brought up by my Great Grandfather. Nath and Louie Cook are my Great Great Aunt and Uncle. Nath was brother to Great Grandfather Cook. Any information you can give me would be a great help.

Very interesting site; sad that the District Council so mismanaged our affairs that our almost-new Aquasplash Leisure Centre had to be pulled down after only 15 years.

Never mind, the Council has a brand-new £4million set of offices and that is far more important to them than learning to swim or keep-fit.

I have lived in Bampton Street since 1970. Do you know the date the old cottages above Quirke Street were built? We have recently found a brick on the floor in our kithcen with the date 1877 on it, I think it could have been made in Alcombe. I would like to know if any of the properties in Bampton Street would have had a well.

I have at last made a long overdue visit to Minehead, what a friendly place everyone we met spoke
I am sure that by now i have a label stating 'visitor', but it's only to be expected,it was strange passing people who probably went to school with me and not knowing them.
Having read through your site it proved to be very useful as knowing something of the the history
made our visit interesting.
My husband dropped me off at the church (St Michael's) and i walked down towards my old home, having taken a look at the stepping stones in the lane, i decided i no longer had the agility to cross them, so walked past Jame's farm
instead.( Used to be Two Mr James and their sister Margorie)
What a sad site 2,Moor Rd neglected is an understatement! does anyone still live there?
Made my way down the road and passed the arch where the hanging took place, didn't know anything about this it was where Doctor Cooper and his son Peter kept their horses as far as we were concerned, made good use of the large outside wall for ball games.
Continued left, no little shop anymore.
Pilgrims Corner ( white house at the bottom of Church Steps) used to be a cafe, bought as a hobby for the daughter Judy Harris, we spent many hours together and she became a friend until she returned to London and we lost touch.
By this time, my other half was getting seriously fedup, so we made for the town ,coffee and lunch. We had a quick look at my Gran's house, ( Quay West, nice park where the rubbish tip used to be) she used to do BandB, had many artist playing atThe Queen's Theatre on the front.
One who was to become famous Yehudi Menuhin who i remember mum telling me how he played the violin for them one evening of his stay.
Musn't leave it so long for another visit, couldn't wait to get out in my youth, now wishing to come back.
Take care and keep up the good work.
Grace Bracey nee Bailey xx
